Sky Tunnels for a roof light for dim rooms

Posted by admin on Nov 22, 2008

Having searched most of the internet looking for more info on Sky  tubes I have noticed Sky tubes can cost anything from £2xx to over £500+ then the cost of fitting too.

I then started asking people have they heard of a Sky tube/ Sun tunnel / Solar Light most have sort of said “yeah I know what you mean”. But when I then asked “do you know anyone who has had one installed?” everyone said “NO!”.

So i am wonder why not and roughly how many people do own one or have had them fitted. Supermarkets and offices have started using natural lighting using reflective mirrors to bounce the light from the roof around the building down to the ground floor.

The ideal room usually for a home to use a Sky Tube/ Sun Tunnel / Light pipe is a dark or dim hall way or an en-suite off a main bedroom with no windows.

The way energy prices are going it won’t be long until people do realise that free lighting will be worth a lot more in years to come.

Builders install Sky/Sun tubes/tunnels

In every new home that has a hall way or en-suite builders should include a sky tube or sun tunnel as a standard feature.

This will be such a long term investment and great selling feature for homes.

Builders can dress them up how ever they want.

  • Sky dome
  • Sky tube
  • Sky tunnel
  • Sky light
  • light tunnel
  • light dome

How ever they do it it will be good news for dark unlit halls and save money for lighting in en-suites.

Sky Tubes enable light to be channeled into rooms through a reflective tubular pipe. Sky tubes use the shiny tubing to guide natural sunlight from the roof of your home. A wide diameter Silver Tube is used to let light flood into the room below. This is fitted between the joists in your loft, the tube will let enough light to brighten a whole room with natural light for free using no electric.

The tube will fit into a Variable Pitch Adaptor (VPA) close to the roof, the tube can then be turned to the South in winter to make the most of the sun when its low in the sky.

If the fitting is tight in the loft for tubes to be fitted some Adaptors that are Angled are available for tight locations.

Sky tubes been fitted to your house will save you money from reduction in electric and gas cost.

Getting a Sky tube fitted will help reduce your whole families carbon foot print as you don’t have to turn on internal lighting until it is quite dim outside.
